Carpets Made With Shell Chemicals CORTERRA Fibers Outperform Nylon in ASCR Stain Removal Study
DALTON, Ga., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Carpets using yarn made with Shell
Chemicals* CORTERRA** Fibers scored higher on more evaluations of stain
removal than the market-leading branded nylon carpet in a recent study
conducted by The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration
(ASCR).
Shell Chemicals announced the findings today at Carpet Technologies '99 in
Dalton, Ga.
ASCR is the leading trade association for cleaning and restoration
professionals and the most widely accepted authority, trainer and educator in
the industry.
ASCR's report notes that both carpets made with CORTERRA Fibers and nylon
scored very well for the majority of the stains. Carpets made with CORTERRA
Fibers recorded average ratings higher than 4.5 on 85 percent of the
evaluations (34 of 40), significantly more than the branded nylon, which had
average ratings of 4.5 or higher on 67 percent of the evaluations (27 of 40).
A rating of 5.0 means that after cleaning there is no visible stain.
Ratings of 4.0 to 4.5 mean that there remains a slight stain not normally
visible to a casual observer. Ratings of 3.0 to 3.4 indicate a noticeable
stain; 2.0 to 2.3 a considerable stain; and 1.0 to 1.2 a heavy stain.
"The results verify that carpets made with CORTERRA Fibers are well suited
for residential and commercial applications," said Tom Rennie, CORTERRA
Business Manager, Carpets. "Carpets made with CORTERRA Fibers can be easily
cleaned with standard carpet cleaning equipment. Unlike topically treated
stain resistant nylon, no special procedures are required to clean them."
The ASCR report is the most recent study in which carpets made with
CORTERRA Fibers outperformed nylon in stain removal and soiling tests. In
comparative tests of soiling carried out in Europe recently, Rennie said,
carpets made with CORTERRA Fibers performed better than the identical branded
nylon controls.
ASCR's study evaluated the stain resistance characteristics of carpets
made with CORTERRA Fibers to various stain-causing agents. Shell provided
samples of carpets constructed of CORTERRA Fibers. ASCR performed the
application and cleaning of stains on the carpet samples. ASCR also evaluated
the effectiveness of the cleaning.
ASCR tested two different samples of carpets -- one constructed of CORTERRA
Fibers and a similar one constructed of nylon, with 20 different staining
agents. The samples provided by Shell were pre-cut into 6"x4" squares. The
staining agents used were cola, ink (ball point pen), shoe polish, lipstick,
urine, iodine/alcohol, red wine, ice cream, tea, chocolate syrup, mud, egg,
catsup, benzoyl peroxide, Kool-Aid, permanent ink, coffee, mustard, motor oil
and grape juice.
ASCR noted that benzoyl peroxide completely bleached the nylon carpet, but
had no effect on carpet made with CORTERRA Fibers. ASCR said that this is
important because bleaching is an irreversible color loss, whereas other
staining agents may potentially be removed. This acne medication is commonly
used in the home and thus can do irreparable damage to piece-dyed nylon
carpets.
