"SOOT LINES" Filtration soil lines are usually found along the walls, on staircases, and near heat vents or cold air returns. The soil is from pollution in the air, and is not usually just dust. It is located where it is, because there is a gap between the flooring and the walls, and air moves through that gap, and the carpet acts the same as a furnace filter, trapping these solid particles of "soot". As time passes, there is a build-up of these particles, and in most cases, from the top of the carpet to the backing becomes full and is unsightly, especially on lighter colored or white carpets. Most vacuum cleaners do not clean the edges of a carpet very well, as their main effort is in the center of the vacuum orifice. Some vacuum cleaners have a slot at the edges, to help here, but there is no beating action in this location, and the actual suction at the edges is very small, relatively speaking. Vacuuming this area is not usually successful, even when a crevice tool attached to the vacuum cleaner is used. Because the carbon particles are attached to the carpet fibers and each other by electrostatic bonding. Therefore, to remove these "soot lines" a different effort is required. First, vacuum with a crevice tool to remove all that is loose. Then apply a water based detergent that is safe to apply to carpets, and is formulated to suspend solids- not dissolve them, as you would use to remove graphite spilled on a carpet. Graphite is finely ground carbon solids that are not water, or solvent soluble. The soot found in these filtration areas falls into the same category. Next, use a brush similar to a toothbrush- not too stiff, as that would fray the carpet fibers, and not too limber, as that will not be aggressive enough- and scrub the detergent into the filtration soils to loosen them from the carpet fibers. Remove by rinsing the loosened soils out with a steam cleaning wand, or a steam crevice tool, or absorb up with terry cloths, followed with a clear water rinse, and more cloths.
